With our Ph.D. in Health Equity, you will become a champion for social justice and equality. You’ll gain the skills and know-how needed to become a successful health researcher and leader working to stem the tide of health disparities by promoting health equity in your community, across the country or around the world.
Doctoral candidates learn from and work alongside dedicated faculty and researchers. You’ll receive top instruction, research mentoring, and hands-on opportunities you’ll be able to draw from in your current or future career.
This program provides comprehensive research training, preparing students for leadership positions in:
- Universities and institutions of higher education
- State, federal, and global governmental and non-governmental agencies
- Public health and social justice organizations
- Healthcare provider organizations
Doctoral Admission Requirements
- A master's degree in Public Health or related field from an accredited university.
- A minimum graduate cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0.
- Proof of English language proficiency for all non-native speakers of English, regardless of citizenship, as required by the NMSU Graduate School.
- Evidence of completing one graduate level course (3 credit hours) in statistics or biostatistics.

NMSU’s Master of Public Health (MPH) degree will empower you to positively impact your community by fostering better health through education, research, policy, and implementation of best practices. We have concentrations in Health Behavior and Health Promotion (HBHP) or Health Management, Administration, and Policy (HMAP). We also offer a non-degree Graduate Certificate in Public Health and a joint MPH/MSW dual degree program.
Students pursuing an MPH degree must complete 42 credit hours and 160 hours of field experience. Field experience allows you the opportunity to apply classroom learning to actual public health problems and solutions. Designed with you in mind, our MPH program can be completed in-person or online.
Accreditation
The Master’s in Public Health is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).

Master's Admission Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education with a 3.0 minimum GPA.
- Official transcripts for each university attended (uploaded to the online admissions system).
- Three references with at least one from a former faculty; the others from employers and/or colleagues.
- A personal statement covering academic background and career goals.
Students pursuing a graduate certificate must complete 5 courses worth a total of 15-credit hours. The program is offered in both an online and on-campus format. The program of study includes the following courses:
- Community and Psychosocial Aspects of Public Health
- Epidemiological Approaches to Diseases Control and Prevention
- Health Services Systems: Administration and Organization
- Environmental Public Health Issues
- Students are also required to complete one, three-credit elective course

NMSU is affordable – on campus or online
Financial aid and scholarships in addition to various awards are available to new and current graduate students at New Mexico State University. Master’s students can also look into assistantships and fellowships. Doctoral candidates have opportunities for research and teaching assistantships.
